Product Overview

The QSense&Control© system is a WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) system that allows users to be able to not only digitize data from their process control sensors but also transmit the data over long distances and control process variables in response to changes that appear in the control variables.

In this regard, the system can be deployed as a stand alone process controller that can plug into an existing network or function completely independent of the process control infrastructure in the environment where it is being deployed as countermeasure against failure or for backup purposes when system upgrades are being made.

Control algorithms are provided directly to the QSense&Control© system via a software control panel and the individual WSN nodes are able to relay the commands directly to the electronic equipment that is to be controlled or communicate with control equipment using Modbus, UART, RS-232 or RS-485 communication protocols.

System Components

The system comprises of various components that work together to transport data from the location where the sensors are located to the HMI in the control room. The complete components that make up the system are indicated below. These components work together to transport data from sensors to the central software and take control action as per user requirements.

Sense and Control nodes

Sense and Control nodes are nodes that are installed at the location where the process is to be managed. These nodes can collect data from 4-20 mA Industrial current loop sensors, digital sensors and voltage based sensors. The nodes are also able to pass control signals to Industrial control equipment via RS-232, Modbus, UART, RS-485 or simple control signals to control relay outputs. The nodes can also communicate via the MTConnect or OPC-UA standard.

Example Case 

To further understand how this works we can look at an example where the process control requirements are to turn on the valve to tank 1 every time liquid that is being extracted crosses the limit set in a main collection tank (which we can call tank 2) that is located 2 km from tank 1. Since the QSense&Control©System is wireless mesh network the triggers are set in the software and the data is sent remotely via RF from the node installed on tank 2 to the node installed on tank 1.

Once the liquid crosses allowed levels, the control signal from the node on tank 2 will send the request to the node on tank 1. Upon receiving the signal the node installed on tank 1 will send a control signal to the VFD via the Modbus protocol signalling it to turn the valve on. The mesh network will also locate the nearest sink node in the system and send share the process log data which can then be viewed via HMI. The sink node can also share summarized data with a cloud platform as all nodes keep local logs for a limited time before sending their summary reports with the central control room.

HMI

The HMI of the system can be any desktop PC, Tablet running  Android or iOS, Laptop or a Mobile Phone. Any device that has a web browsing facility built into it. The HMI displays the entire process and its overview and also allows the user to probe into each node for individual information extraction and view the process control algorithms that are running on each device.
